Natural light can instantly change the way you feel about a home. As the days start to get shorter, we will all be craving that cheery and bright feeling of natural sunlight. Sadly, not all homes were designed to let in as much sunlight as we would like, and without a major renovation it isn’t easy to add more windows. As a buyer, this is often one of the factors that makes a house attractive. So, as a homeowner and a potential seller, what can you do to maximize natural light in your home?

If natural light in your home is a challenge, there are a few tricks you can use to boost your home’s light:

1) Use the right window coverings

You can make the size of a window seem larger by hanging your curtain rod at the top of the ceiling this emphasizes the size. Minimal window coverings or sheers will allow the maximum amount of light to shine in, making the most of what light you do have.

2) Be aware of your furniture and wall colours.

Don’t get us wrong, we are not saying everything in the house needs to be white or beige, we love a pop of colour! However, overwhelmingly dark interior furniture can make a space feel small and dark. A fresh coat of paint can change everything. Adding a light airy colour to the walls or painting the majority white can change the way the light feels in the room, making it feel larger and brighter.

3) Reflect the light with mirrors.

Accent mirrors are not only a way to add some style to your home, but they can really enhance and even truly increase the light in a space. We love a good mirror, and by adding mirrors strategically in places either near a window or across from where the sun shines in, is the best way to reflect the light back into the space.  Mirrors can even increase light from ceiling fixtures spreading it across the space.

4) Fake it till you make it.

If you don’t have a ton of natural light coming into your home supplement with artificial light from light fixtures. Adding new light fixtures can enhance the light in the daytime and keep a space comfy and well-lit into the evening. A quick way to add an updated style and add more light is to update ceiling fixtures to a style that has more bulbs or allows for more light to pass through the shade.

5) Choose the right hue.

The specific hue of the lightbulb or pots can dramatically impact the feeling of light in the home. We personally love a bright white, between 3000-3500 lumens.

6) Layers of lighting.

Try adding various light sources to customize the level of light throughout the day. Add lamps and accent lighting where you can.

Having the right light is just one of the ways a buyer will find your home attractive and create the right feeling in a space.  But why wait until you are ready to sell to make your home feel more comfortable? Try some of these in your home soon and let the light shine in!!
